Handbook for isle protection<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The result of an environmental audit on Bira
\nIsland will be used as a handbook to protect the environment of
\nother islands of the Seribu Island chain in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
State Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja told
\nreporters on Kelapa Island, North Jakarta, yesterday that the
\nresult of the audit is expected to help improve the quality of
\nthe environment in Seribu Islands.<\/p>\n
\"The result will provide necessary actions on how to protect
\nthe environment of small islands because up until now we don't
\nhave any special guide to do so,\" Sarwono said after attending a
\nceremony sponsored by the city administration to commemorate
\nWorld Environment Day on Kelapa Island.<\/p>\n
The ceremony was also attended by Governor Surjadi Soedirdja
\nas well as a number of noted businessmen such as Pontjo Sutowo
\nand Dali Sofari.<\/p>\n
In the commemoration the governor and the minister
\nsymbolically initiated the reforestation program on Seribu Island
\nby planting mangrove and sukun (breadfruit) trees.<\/p>\n
Both officials also released hundreds of turtles at nearby
\nOpak Island.<\/p>\n
Sarwono explained that the guide book will list things that
\ncan or cannot be done by the owners or residents of the islands.<\/p>\n
The audit, Sarwono said, can also provide information for the
\nmanagement of small islands.<\/p>\n
Recently, President Soeharto underlined the importance of
\nrejuvenating the environment and called for stern action against
\nPT Pulau Seribu Paradise, the developer constructing the
\ncontroversial golf course on Bira Island, if it refused to abide
\nby existing regulations.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto made the remarks after Minister Sarwono
\ndetailed the poor condition of Bira Island, mostly the result of
\nunabated tree felling for the construction of the golf course.<\/p>\n
In response to the call, the Environmental Impact Management
\nAgency has called on the management of the company to undergo an
\nenvironment audit. The company is being asked to finance the
\naudit while the agency will provide qualified consultants to do
\nthe audit.<\/p>\n
\"The audit should be done by qualified consultants because the
\nresult will be used as guidance to protect the environment of
\nother islands of the Seribu Island chain,\" Sarwono said.<\/p>\n
He also said that the audit will be based on the environmental
\nImpact Analysis, which still has to be done by the developer.<\/p>\n
Last February, the city administration's commission on
\nenvironment Impact Analysis turned down the developer's Bira
\nIsland analysis for the third time.<\/p>\n
The analysis is a mandatory assessment that must be presented
\nby developers to ensure that any development will not produce
\nunwanted effects on the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n
The analysis result will reveal any environment risk to the
