        "content": "<p>Gaza (ANTARA) - Hamas on Thursday (May 14) called for a direct\nmeeting with the Fatah movement to discuss a joint \u2018national strategy\u2019\nafter the conclusion of its eighth general conference.<\/p>\n<p>Hossam Badran, head of Hamas\u2019s National Relations Office and a member\nof its political bureau, said in a statement that the conference was \u201can\nopportunity to achieve change in internal Palestinian national\nrelations,\u201d and could contribute to \u201cenhancing readiness and preparation\nto confront Israeli plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Badran accused Israel of seeking \u201cto eliminate the Palestinian\nstruggle completely by exploiting the current international and regional\nsituation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called on the Fatah leadership to hold a \u201cdirect meeting\u201d with\nHamas after the conference to agree on \u201ca Palestinian national strategy\non all issues concerning the Palestinian people during this sensitive\nstage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time for us to overcome differences and the effects of the\npast\u201d and focus on \u201cthe present and the future based on national\npartnership and shared responsibility,\u201d Badran said.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to take \u201cpolitical steps and concrete actions\ncommensurate with the sacrifices of the Palestinian people,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>Fatah, founded by the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 1959,\nis the largest faction in the Palestine Liberation Organization and has\nbeen the dominant force in the Palestinian Authority.<\/p>\n<p>The eighth Fatah general conference opened on Thursday in the city of\nRamallah, in the West Bank, with sessions held simultaneously in Gaza,\nCairo and Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day conference is expected to produce the names of the\nmembers of the two highest leadership bodies of the movement, namely the\nCentral Committee and the Revolutionary Council.<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of the conference, the eighth Fatah general\nconference re-elected Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as its leader,\nthe official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, reported.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh Fatah general conference was held in Ramallah in 2016,\nwhere Abbas was also re-elected as the leader of the movement.<\/p>\n<p>Fatah and Hamas have been at odds since 2007, when Hamas took control\nof Gaza, while Fatah remained dominant in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The two Palestinian factions have been involved in several rounds of\ntalks in Beijing and Cairo in recent years to promote internal\nPalestinian reconciliation and discuss post-war arrangements in\nGaza.<\/p>",
