'Halal' stickers for MUI<\/p>\n

The government's plan to impose halal (permissible under
\nIslamic law) labeling\/certification requirements on food
\nproducts, as reported by this daily, is a waste of time. Food
\nproduct inspection and labeling should be left to the Indonesian
\nUlemas Council (MUI), as has been the case so far.<\/p>\n
As a Muslim, I object to the government's plan for the
\nfollowing reasons. First, producers will bear higher costs for
\nthe halal labeling\/certification because of the many institutions
\ninvolved. Foods, drinks and drugs with government labels would
\nthus be more expensive.<\/p>\n
Second, corruption, collusion and nepotism are still
\nfrequently found in government agencies, so these practices are
\nlikely to affect the process of labeling.<\/p>\n
Third, I would suggest that before planning to impose this
\nrequirement, the Ministry of Religious Affairs should first make
\nitself halal in its performance. For instance, in organizing the
\nhaj pilgrimage it should use the service of sharia banks instead
\nof conventional banks.<\/p>\n
