Indonesia's Minister of Industry has highlighted the significant opportunity for domestic manufacturers to expand into global halal markets, which are valued at over US$3 trillion annually. The Ministry of Industry will accelerate halal certification processes and provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises, positioning Indonesia as a potential leader in the global halal supply chain whilst boosting domestic economic growth.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that
entrepreneurs have the opportunity to expand access to global markets,
particularly in countries with predominantly Muslim populations, by
obtaining halal certification. “Halal certification not only provides
legal certainty for Muslim consumers, but also guarantees product
quality, raw material safety, and transparency in production processes,”
he said in a written statement on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Based on data compiled by the Ministry of Industry, the potential
value of global halal market transactions could exceed US$3 trillion per
year. However, intra-trade among member states of the Organisation of
Islamic Cooperation (OIC) remains relatively low, creating a gap between
import requirements and the export potential of halal products.

According to Agus, this situation presents a significant opportunity
for Indonesia to expand its share of the global halal product market. He
expressed confidence that with the strength of Indonesia’s manufacturing
sector and substantial support from natural resources and human capital,
Indonesia has the potential to become a major player in the global halal
supply chain.

Agus stated that the halal industry no longer serves merely to supply
the religious needs of communities. Beyond this, the Golkar politician
said the halal industry opens high-value economic opportunities and is
capable of contributing significantly to the growth of manufacturing
industries and the national economy.

Agus noted that public awareness of halal products is no longer
solely related to religious compliance. Rather, halal products are
increasingly associated with quality assurance and product safety
guarantees.

He explained that halal products are considered to have more
transparent production processes, higher hygiene standards, and provide
better consumer protection.

The Ministry of Industry will continue to encourage domestic industry
players, particularly the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME)
sector, to proactively obtain halal certification. This is because halal
certification is believed to enhance the competitiveness of domestic
industrial products in both domestic and global markets.

Agus stated that the Ministry of Industry will also accelerate the
halal certification process through various coaching and facilitation
programmes for industry players to meet applicable halal standards.
",
