Muhammadiyah Chairman Haedar Nashir has received the status of\nWartawan Utama (Senior Journalist) from the Indonesian Press Council. He\nrecalled his early days as a journalist for Suara Muhammadiyah, which\nbegan in 1984. \u201cSo I became a journalist for Suara Muhammadiyah in 1984.\nI am sure some of you were not even born yet. I started as a junior\nreporter at Suara Muhammadiyah, the oldest media outlet in Indonesia,\nfounded in 1915,\u201d Haedar said in his speech after receiving the status\nat the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta in South Tangerang on\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Haedar then reminisced about his struggles during his time as a\nreporter. He admitted that he once had to walk to find news. \u201cFor nearly\nfive years, I was truly forged by Mr.\u00a0Hazim Amir (the then\nEditor-in-Chief of Suara Muhammadiyah) to become a field journalist. A\nfield journalist who gathered news from various places and regions,\ntaking buses, trains, walking, and using all sorts of vehicles I had to\nutilise in Java and outside Java,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Haedar also recalled that his news copy was once torn up because it\ndid not meet the standards. He also shared a story about his copy being\ncrossed out with red ink. \u201cAnd that experience, in my opinion, truly\nshaped me into a journalist, not just a writer. Becoming a journalist,\nit was not uncommon for the news I wrote to be rejected. In fact, once\nor twice it was torn up right in front of me. It stung. I had written it\nfeeling that it was correct and good, in accordance with journalistic\nprinciples. But no, it was torn up in front of me. There were also times\nwhen it was crossed out with a red pen,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n
That journey eventually led Haedar to become the Editor-in-Chief of\nSuara Muhammadiyah. He stated that he has no tolerance for journalists\nwho write carelessly. \u201cAfter that journey, I eventually became the\nEditor-in-Chief. That foundation meant I had zero tolerance for\njournalists who wrote carelessly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Haedar then expressed his gratitude to the Press Council for granting\nhim the Wartawan Utama status. He admitted that he had previously wanted\nto obtain the Senior Journalist card. \u201cSo I thank the Press Council. I\nonce wanted to get the Senior Journalist card, but at that time I didn\u2019t\ntake the test.
