Habibie's performance determines Golkar's fate<\/p>\n
In anticipating the strategies that political parties will be
\nusing in their campaigns which start today, it is not difficult
\nto foretell that the issue of corruption, collusions and
\nnepotism, including by ex-president Soeharto, will be among the
\nmain themes they will be using to assail Golkar. A People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) decree regarding this matter dictates
\nthat firm measures be taken against any offender without
\nexception, including former president Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Another point concerns the problem of public security, which
\nalso has not been satisfactorily established. It must be said
\nthat the security authorities have tried to overcome the unrest
\nin several regions -- with rather satisfactory results even
\nthough there have been rather frequent recurrences in some
\nregions.<\/p>\n
With Habibie's nomination as Golkar's sole presidential
\ncandidate, it will depend on his performance, both as president
\nand as an individual citizen, whether or not his appointment will
\nbe able to boost Golkar's votes in the upcoming elections.
\nHabibie's personal image can no longer be separated from that of
\nGolkar.<\/p>\n
