Habibie's action awaited<\/p>\n
The report of the House of Representatives' special commission
\non the Bank Bali scandal disclosed the names of seven state
\nofficials and eight others suspected of being either directly or
\nindirectly involved in the case.<\/p>\n
The report also asked President B.J. Habibie to take immediate
\nlegal action by suspending any government officials suspected of
\ninvolvement in the (irregular) process of facilitating the
\ndisbursement from government guarantee funds to the amount of Rp
\n904.6 billion to Bank Bali.<\/p>\n
Aside from the fact that such action is needed to improve the
\ngovernment's credibility abroad, market players are hoping that
\nfirm action from Habibie can improve sentiments in money and
\ncapital markets. The point is that it is necessary to make sure
\nthat the value of the rupiah to the U.S. dollar remains favorable
\nat any given time.<\/p>\n
Admittedly, Habibie finds himself in a problematic situation.
\nNevertheless, this the perfect moment for him to give a more
\nreformist nuance to his tenure, especially considering the
\ncondition which we find ourselves in at present as we try to move
\ntoward an economic recovery.<\/p>\n
