Habibie urged to show statesmanship<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former members of the Association of Moslem
\nStudents demanded on Wednesday that President B.J. Habibie
\ncarefully weigh potential ramifications of another term in office
\nand demonstrate statesmanship given the deep reservations about
\nhis government's legitimacy.<\/p>\n
Anniswati M. Kamaluddin, the chairwoman of the National
\nCouncil of Islamic Student Alumni (KAHMI), said Habibie should
\nnot entertain a presidential bid if his current position and
\ncandidacy turned out be \"a source of conflicts\".<\/p>\n
Habibie has dismissed reports he is willing to serve again.<\/p>\n
\"KAHMI suggests that President Habibie genuinely demonstrate
\nhis statesmanship and be open and accommodative to public
\naspirations,\" Anniswati said at a media conference announcing the
\norganization's stance.<\/p>\n
It recommended that the President \"consider power sharing with
\nother national figures\" particularly in carrying out the reform
\nagenda.<\/p>\n
The statement also urged the public to \"accept the fact that
\nHabibie's government was born out of (a state of) emergency\"
\ndespite lingering questions of legitimacy. It is nevertheless
\nconstitutional and public acceptance is needed for it to execute
\nits tasks, the group said.<\/p>\n
KAHMI urged the Armed Forces to adjust its role in the face of
\nchanging times and increasing demands of a civil society. The
\nArmed Forces \"should be professionally improved to provide a
\nsense of security to all citizens\", it said. (anr)<\/p>",
