Habibie submits three names for post at BI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President B.J. Habibie has submitted names of
\nthree candidates to the House of Representatives for the position
\nof senior deputy governor of Bank Indonesia, according to a
\nlegislator.<\/p>\n
They are noted economist Anwar Nasution, senior banker Binhadi
\nand deputy for monetary and fiscal policy at the National
\nDevelopment Planning Board Sukarno W.<\/p>\n
The House is expected to meet on June 24 to decide which of
\nthe candidates will become the second highest executive of the
\ncentral bank.<\/p>\n
A new central bank law, which was approved by the President
\nlast month, provides independence for Bank Indonesia in deciding
\nmonetary policy.<\/p>\n
Under the law, the House is given a say in deciding key
\npositions at the central bank.<\/p>\n
Habibie reappointed Sjahril Sabirin last month to a second
\nfive-year term as governor.<\/p>\n
He also reappointed all existing directors as deputy governors
\nto assist Sjahril.<\/p>\n
The central bank governor will head the board of governors,
\nwhich includes the senior deputy governor and deputy governors.<\/p>\n
The president cannot dismiss the governor and members of the
\nboard of governors.<\/p>\n
Under the law, the government is obliged to ask for the advice
\nof Bank Indonesia or to invite the governor to a Cabinet meeting
\non economic and monetary affairs.<\/p>\n
The board of governors will provide recommendations to the
\ngovernment on drafting the state budget or other economic
\npolicies related to Bank Indonesia's authority or function.<\/p>\n
The board of governors will arrange monthly meetings, in which
\na representative of the government will be invited, to decide
\nmonetary policy.<\/p>\n
The board of governors also organizes a weekly internal
\nmeeting to evaluate the monthly monetary policy.<\/p>\n
The meeting is only valid if it is attended by at least half
\nof the members of the board of governors.<\/p>\n
The decision-making process is through a vote. In the event of
\na hung vote, the governor's decision is final.(rei)<\/p>",
