Habibie seeks Manila's aid<\/p>\n
MANILA (Reuters): Indonesia's top technology minister has
\nurged the Philippines to support an Indonesian aircraft project
\nthat recently lost government funding under IMF-sponsored
\nreforms, the Philippine presidential palace said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"The Philippines, Indonesia and the rest of ASEAN will
\nfacilitate the region's economic recovery if we will patronize
\nour own. It is for our self-interest for the future,\" a statement
\nfrom the palace quoted Indonesian State Minister for Research
\nand Technology B.J. Habibie as saying.<\/p>\n
Habibie met Philippine President Fidel Ramos in Manila, but
\nrefused to talk to reporters after his 30-minute closed-door
\ncourtesy call.<\/p>\n
The Philippines would send a technical team and a group of
\nprivate businessmen to Indonesia to follow up on Habibie's
\nproposal, it quoted Ramos as saying.<\/p>\n
Habibie is closely linked to state aircraft maker, Industri
\nPesawat Terbang Nusantara (IPTN), that was cut off from
\ngovernment funding under the recent International Monetary Fund-
\ninitiated fiscal reforms aimed at reviving Indonesia's ailing
\neconomy.<\/p>",
