        "content": "<p>Habibie reprimands LIPI staff<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): State Minister of Research and Technology B.J.<br>\nHabibie has reprimanded 19 researchers of the National Institute<br>\nof Sciences who issued a statement last month demanding a new<br>\nnational leader.<\/p>\n<p>Habibie said yesterday the researchers were guilty of using<br>\nthe institute and its facilities for an activity unrelated to<br>\ntheir jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\"People who carry out routine jobs should not use their<br>\noffices or their facilities for other business. It's bad<br>\nconduct,\" Habibie was quoted as saying by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>\"They (the intellectuals) have their own channel for<br>\ndisclosing their research results (that is) in scientific<br>\npublications, not in joint statements,\" Habibie said on the<br>\nsidelines of a House of Representatives hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the institute, Soefjan Tsauri, criticized as a<br>\nviolation of ethics the manner in which the researchers unveiled<br>\ntheir concerns about the economic crisis, but said the case was<br>\nclosed.<\/p>\n<p>He said he would not set in place administrative sanctions<br>\nagainst the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\"Researchers may sometimes do wrong, but they never tell<br>\nlies,\" said Soefjan who attended a separate hearing at the House<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said he could not ban the researchers from making<br>\nstatements because they did so in their personal capacities.<\/p>\n<p>The 19 researchers called last month for the election of a new<br>\npresident saying it was necessary if the country intended to heal<br>\nits ailing economy.<\/p>\n<p>They said they doubted the present government could lead the<br>\nnation out of the crisis, mainly because of its stubborn refusal<br>\nto undertake comprehensive reform.
