Habibie praises Australia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Impressed with its technological ability,
\nIndonesia has asked Australia to develop the Asia-Pacific region
\ninto a "center of excellence".<\/p>\n
The call was voiced on Saturday by State Minister for Research
\nand Technology B.J. Habibie, who is on a ten-day visit to
\nAustralia.<\/p>\n
In a televised interview, he also tried to explain why
\nIndonesia earlier lacked an appreciation for its southern
\nneighbor's technological advances, opting instead to send
\nstudents to western Europe, the United States or Japan.<\/p>\n
Indonesia "looks up" to those countries, he said, "because
\nmost top Indonesian scientists and engineers have been educated
\nin those countries."<\/p>\n
Furthermore, "they have been more involved in Indonesian
\ndevelopment by providing capital and technological assistance",
\nHabibie was reported as saying by the Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
The interview will be broadcasted by ATVI international
\ntelevision this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Habibie, who is also the president of the Indonesian aircraft
\nindustry PT IPTN and chairman of the Board of Strategic
\nIndustries, is being accompanied by around 50 officials,
