Habibie for vice president<\/p>\n

I agree with those who believe that the next vice president
\nshould be minister B.J. Habibie. He is a national leader who is
\nqualified for the job. Here are some reasons:<\/p>\n
* Being a Moslem he will be supported by Moslems who make up
\nmost of this nation.<\/p>\n
* His adherence to the religion is steadfast, as reflected by
\nhis position as the leader of the Moslem intellectuals
\nassociation.<\/p>\n
* His scientific qualifications are well-reputed as he is the
\nhead of the nation's strategic industries, including IPTN the
\naircraft maker.<\/p>\n
If only he could get rid of corrupt officials in the
\nindustries, the country's economy would surely be boosted and the
\nnation's self-confidence assured.<\/p>\n
Being a civilian and outer islander, his election will stave
\noff the impression that a vice president is almost always a
\nJavanese military person.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, there seems to be two trivial things blocking
\nhis way to the nation's second-highest position.<\/p>\n
First, whether he has prepared his younger leaders to handle
\nthe strategic industrial projects?<\/p>\n
Second, whether he will be able to change his image of leaning
\nheavily on the government-backed Golkar because as a vice
\npresident he would belong to the whole nation. I have my doubts
\nbecause his role with Golkar has been too prominent.<\/p>\n
Some say that the 1998\/2003 vice president will be in a
\nstrategic position given the advanced age of President Soeharto
\n(who it is believed will be reelected).<\/p>\n
I disagree. The presidency and the vice presidency have always
\nbeen important positions and that is why we have always tried to
\nchoose the best people.<\/p>\n
The incapacity of a president or a vice president to serve his
\nor her term in full should not be cause for concern because, as a
\nreligious nation, we will certainly leave all matters to God.<\/p>\n
