Gymnasts to compete overseas before Games<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Local gymnasts will compete overseas in the
\nlead-up to the 19th SEA Games, the secretary-general of the
\nIndonesian Gymnastics Association (Persani) said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Sri Hastuti Merdiko said five of the SEA Games squad's 31
\ngymnasts would be sent overseas.<\/p>\n
Jonathan Sianturi, Harun Fauzi Rangkuti, Nita Mardiana, Novi
\nKartiansari and Yulianti will compete in the Arafura Games in
\nAustralia from May 10 to May 17, the Continent Championships in
\nAustralia in June or the Universiade in Sicily, Italy, in August.<\/p>\n
The national gymnastics squad is being coached by Russians,
\nKouznetsov Iouri and Irina Voino.<\/p>\n
\"Persani plans to employ more coaches to train the gymnasts.
\nAlexander Gusrov and Elenora have been chosen,\" Hastuti was
\nquoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Hastuti and Frederick Huma, the association's technical
\ndirector, said foreign coaches were vital for the squad.<\/p>\n
Frederick said the foreign coaches had helped the gymnasts
\nshape their routines which local coaches had not thought about.<\/p>\n
\"Foreign coaches have more experience than our coaches since
\nthey have trained gymnasts of world caliber,\" Frederick said.<\/p>\n
Irina, coach of the women's team, said local gymnasts had
\nprogressed and were easy to train.<\/p>\n
Irina, who has trained the team for two years, has two local
\nassistant coaches.<\/p>\n
\"The gymnasts train five hours a day, two hours in the morning
\nand three hours in the afternoon. The gymnasts are training
\nintensively,\" she said.<\/p>\n
\"I only hope the gymnasts can capture as many golds as
\npossible in the SEA Games,\" Irina said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia hopes to win several gold medals in gymnastics at
\nthe SEA Games. Sixteen golds are at stake: 14 for men's and
\nwomen's artistic events and two for women's rhythmic gymnastics.
