Gusmao a reluctant presidential campaigner<\/p>\n
EAST TIMOR: Independence hero Xanana Gusmao said on Tuesday he
\nwould be happy to lose the former Indonesian territory's April 14
\npresidential election.<\/p>\n
\"If I lose, it would be better for me,\" the charismatic 56-
\nyear-old former political prisoner told reporters during a visit
\nto Thailand.<\/p>\n
If he wins, as he is widely expected to, Gusmao will lead the
\nworld's newest nation beginning on May 20.<\/p>\n
The only other candidate in the field is Xavier do Amaral, a
\nseasoned politician from the Association of Democratic Timor
\nLeste party.<\/p>\n
\"I hope Mr. Xavier can defeat me, because I am not interested
\nin being president,\" Gusmao said. \"I will say again and again, I

MADAGASCAR: Supporters of embattled Madagascar President Didier
\nRatsiraka said on Tuesday they had set up a rival capital to
\nregroup against protesters who seized control of Antananarivo.<\/p>\n
Five of Madagascar's six regional governors declared the
\neastern port of Toamasina their new stronghold on the Indian
\nOcean Island as opposition leaders tightened their grip on
\ngovernment ministries seized by protesters on Monday.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of thousands of supporters of opposition leader Marc
\nRavalomanana invaded government offices on Monday, aiming to
\ndeclare a final end to Ratsiraka's 23-year rule.<\/p>\n
Ravalomanana's supporters accuse Ratsiraka, one of Africa's
\nlongest serving rulers, of cheating during December presidential
\nelections to deny victory to Ravalomanana, the mayor of
\nAntananarivo.<\/p>\n
Ravalomanana declared himself president last month on the
\nbasis of a December election in which he insists he defeated

AUSTRALIA: Human rights watchdog Amnesty International said on
\nTuesday the Australian government should pay as much attention to
\nrights abuses in its own backyard as it does to violations
\noverseas.<\/p>\n
In the first visit by an Amnesty chief to Australia to discuss
\nrights abuses, secretary-general Irene Khan said the government
\nshould lead its people to a \"humane and enlightened\" approach to
\nrefugees instead of fueling popular prejudices.<\/p>\n
The criticism added to a litany of complaints by human rights
\ngroups about Australia's mandatory detention of asylum seekers,
\nsometimes for years, while their refugee cases are processed.<\/p>\n
Khan said the vilification of illegal immigrants by
\nAustralia's conservative government and its refusal to end the
\ndetention of would-be refugees had damaged the nation's
\nreputation for fairness.<\/p>\n
Some 10,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in Australia in
