Gus Dur's surprising moves<\/p>\n

Recently, the chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)
\norganization, Abdurrahman Wahid (popularly known as Gus Dur),
\nmade some intriguing moves by holding a dialog with Gen. Wiranto,
\nPresident Habibie, even with former president Soeharto. His moves
\nseem to be of great significance, well calculated, and more
\nimportantly they did not harm him and NU.<\/p>\n
The City Forum (Forkot) valued Gus Dur's meeting with Soeharto
\nas a wise act. But National Mandate Party Chairman Amien Rais
\npreferred not to comment on it. In fact, Gus Dur has often taken
\nsteps that have disappointed or even betrayed his fellow leaders
\nof society. But he has always been able to get away with it,
\nalthough sometimes narrowly.<\/p>\n
I believe that Gus Dur still receives important information
\nfrom Benny Moerdani, former Armed Forces commander, and from the
\nCenter for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). His visit
\nto the CSIS in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, to see Benny
\nMoerdani and Harry Tjan Silalahi before meeting Soeharto made the
\nsituation obvious. That was clearly not a casual meeting, neither
\nwas it a courtesy call.<\/p>\n
This and other examples show Gus Dur to be a leader with
\nvision, and to be capable of making a rational and accurate
\nanalysis.<\/p>\n
