        "content": "<p>Gus Dur's sting<\/p>\n<p>I was speaking with my Singaporean friends after President<br>\nAbdurrahman Wahid's criticism of that island-state.<\/p>\n<p>Most of them were very, very offended and said to me: \"Who<br>\ndoes your President think he is, trying to threaten us by<br>\npersuading Malaysia to join forces and cut off the water supply<br>\nto Singapore.\"<\/p>\n<p>They all believed Malaysia would not go for the idea, but even<br>\nif it did they said Singapore was a rich enough country that<br>\ntheir government would be capable of making things happen, i.e.<br>\nfinding another water resource, even treating seawater, no matter<br>\nthe cost.<\/p>\n<p>I could say nothing to counter their comments.
