Gus Dur to attend Jerusalem conference<\/p>\n
JERUSALEM: Former President Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid is to
\njoin an array of international political and religious figures in
\nJerusalem next week for an interfaith peace conference.<\/p>\n
Gus Dur and another 3,000 delegates from around the world will
\nattend the two-day conference, which starts with an opening
\nbanquet at the Sheraton Plaza hotel in the holy city Friday
\nnight.<\/p>\n
Following the conference, the delegates will join hundreds of
\nIsraelis to march for peace through Jerusalem's Old City on
\nMonday, after which there will be peace rally at Independence
\nPark.<\/p>\n
The interfaith conference is sponsored by the Interreligious
\nand International Peace Council -- a body set up by Reverend
\nDoctor Sun Myung Moon, the leader of the Unification Church, more
\ncommonly known as the \"Moonies\".<\/p>\n
Wahid, who held office between 1999-2001, was due to arrive in
\nIsrael on Friday, the conference organisers told AFP.<\/p>\n
The former Indonesian leader, who belongs to Israel's Shimon
\nPeres Foundation, is also the former head of the Nahdlatul Ulama,
\nIndonesia's biggest moderate Islamic group which counts more than
\n40 million members.<\/p>\n
Wahid has been criticised for advocating trade and diplomatic
\nties with Israel.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim majority state, is
\na staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and has no
\ndiplomatic ties with Israel.<\/p>",
