Gus Dur threatens to dissolve Ansor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Moslem
\norganization, Abdurrahman Wahid, threatened to dissolve NU's
\nyouth wing, Ansor, for supporting the ruling Golkar group.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman said Ansor's maneuver goes against NU's apolitical
\nstance. The organization dedicates itself to social and religious
\nmissions.<\/p>\n
\"Ansor should quit NU if it insists on supporting Golkar,\"
\nsaid the controversial Abdurrahman, better known as Gus Dur.<\/p>\n
Ansor chairman Iqbal Assegaf stated during a seminar organized
\nby Golkar on Wednesday that Ansor would support Golkar in next
\nyear's general election.<\/p>\n
Iqbal said that as a Golkar cadre, he had the right to bring
\nAnsor onto Golkar's turf. He claimed he had consulted with senior
\nNU leaders.<\/p>\n
The 30-million strong NU, once a powerful political party,
\npledged in 1984 to abandon politics but guaranteed its members
\nthe individual freedom to join any political organization.<\/p>\n
Before NU proclaimed itself apolitical, Abdurrahman himself
\nwas a Golkar member of the People's Consultative Assembly.<\/p>\n
Senior NU members are active in all three political
\norganizations: Golkar, the Moslem-oriented United Development
\nParty and the Indonesian Democratic Party.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman said he would not regret dissolving Ansor.<\/p>\n
\"We can establish a substitute organization,\" he said. \"I just
\ndon't understand why he did it. It's an unwise move.\"<\/p>\n
He said Iqbal would have to defend his move during an upcoming
\ncongress.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman said Iqbal betrayed NU's apolitical stance.<\/p>\n
\"It is okay if he personally joins Golkar, but he should not
\nbring Ansor along,\" he said. (01)<\/p>",
