Gus Dur set to make another trip in June<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman is scheduled to make
\nanother overseas trip next month, including stopping over for
\nmedical treatment in the United States.<\/p>\n
Without specifying the exact timetable, Minister of Foreign
\nAffairs Alwi Shihab announced on Wednesday that the president
\nwould also go to Japan, France and Egypt.<\/p>\n
According to Alwi, the president will make a brief stopover in
\nTokyo to attend a seminar organized by the economic daily Nihon
\nKeizai Shimbun, before continuing his flight to Salt Lake City,
\nUtah, for treatment of his eyes.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman will visit the Moran Eye Center in Utah where he
\nwas treated in November.<\/p>\n
Doctors concluded then that Abdurrahman's right eye has only
\nabout 20 percent of normal vision, and his left is practically
\nblind.<\/p>\n
The president also has been treated on at least two occasions
\nsince December by a team of doctors from China. He suffered two
\nstrokes before becoming the country's fourth president in
\nOctober.<\/p>\n
Alwi explained that during his visit to France, the president
\nwould receive an honorary doctorate degree from Sorbonne
\nUniversity.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman will also visit Egypt to attend the summit of the
\nGroup of 15 developing countries (G-15) in Cairo.<\/p>\n
The visit to Cairo will be a nostalgic journey for Abdurrahman
\nwho studied at Al Azhar University between 1964 and 1966.<\/p>\n
Alwi also disclosed that the President has not made any
\ndecision about a possible trip to Australia in July, following
\nstrong criticism from the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
