Gus Dur may face police questioning<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A Moslem activist filed a complaint with the
\npolice yesterday over remarks by popular Moslem leader
\nAbdurrahman Wahid he considered slanderous.<\/p>\n
Chief of the City Police Detectives Col. Paimin Aboeamr said
\nthe authorities would study the claim lodged by Andrianto, chief
\nof the Humanika Foundation.<\/p>\n
Andrianto claimed Gus Dur, as Abdurrahman is affectionately
\ncalled, accused Humanika in a seminar this week of masterminding
\nthe Dec. 26 riot in Tasikmalaya, West Java.<\/p>\n
Under the Indonesia legal system, inciting riots is a serious
\noffense that can be tried under the subversion law, which carries
\na maximum penalty of death.<\/p>\n
Andrianto charged that Gus Dur, who chairs the 30 million-
\nstrong Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Moslem organization, had tarnished
\nthe foundation's good name.<\/p>\n
Paimin said the police would summon the conflicting parties if
\nthey deemed the complaint worth investigating.<\/p>\n
Accompanying Andrianto were Humanika's public relations
\nofficer Herdarmin and Nurul Silhi Nawawi, chief of Humanika's
\noffice in Malang, East Java.<\/p>\n
Gus Dur accused Humanika of providing funds for several NU
\nactivists to stir up the riot, which claimed four lives and
\ncaused extensive damage to non-Moslem facilities. (jun)<\/p>",
