Gus Dur may be quizzed over search for Tommy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro
\nimplied on Thursday that former president Abdurrahman Wahid would
\nbe summoned for questioning in connection with the police's
\nefforts to hunt down the fugitive Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra.<\/p>\n
"Principally, we have the duty to question anybody and to
\nsearch any place that could shed light on the case," Bimantoro
\ntold reporters when asked whether the police would summon
\nAbdurrahman, or Gus Dur as he is familiarly known, for
\nquestioning as he admitted to having met Tommy before the latter
\nwent on the run.<\/p>\n
Bimantoro was speaking to reporters after attending a closed
\nhearing with the members of the House of Representatives'
\nCommission II for legal and home affairs.<\/p>\n
Asked what the main problem was in tracking down Tommy,
\nBimantoro simply said, "We have one big problem, we don't know
\nexactly where Tommy is."<\/p>\n
Gus Dur has acknowledged holding a secret meeting with Tommy
\nat the luxury Borobudur Hotel, Central Jakarta, in October last
\nyear, but dismissed speculation that he made any deals to review
\nthe 18-month jail sentence handed down on Tommy.<\/p>\n
Tommy, the youngest son of former president Soeharto and
\nconvicted in a corruption case, has been on the run since Nov. 3,
\nthe day after Gus Dur refused to grant him a presidential pardon.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, police declared that Tommy was the main
\nsuspect behind the murder of Supreme Court justice M. Syafiuddin
\nKartasasmita, who sentenced him to jail.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a joint press conference with Bimantoro,
\nCommission II chairman Amin Arjoso said the House respected,
\nsupported and trusted the National Police in their efforts to
