It is no public secret that many people of various walks of
\nlife are unhappy, disappointed or even fed up with President Gus
\nDur's confusing behavior and statements.<\/p>\n
These feelings of unhappiness, disappointment and disgust have
\nfound expression not only in protest rallies but also in puns, an
\nexample of which is that \"Gus Dur\" can be interpreted as (in
\nIndonesian) Agustus Mundur (Stepping Down in August).<\/p>\n
In August 2000 the annual session of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly (MPR) was held but Gus Dur remained president. Resorting
\nto various arguments and relying on forces supporting him Gus Dur
\nseems to stubbornly cling to his position, a condition leading to
\nan increasingly stronger demand that he resign.<\/p>\n
To avoid this tension from deteriorating into something that
\nmay jeopardize the country's unity, Gus Dur has two choices left:
\nto be forced to step down or to step down voluntarily.<\/p>\n
