Guruh wins Montblanc achievement award<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Despite being tongue-tied, Guruh Irianto
\nSoekarnoputra beamed with elation after accepting the Montblanc
\nAchievement Award 2001 in a lavish ceremony at the Grand Hyatt
\nHotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
"I asked myself, why me?" said the Sukarno clan member and
\nnoted choreographer, composer, designer and avid painter, in his
\nbrief speech.<\/p>\n
The works of Guruh, the fifth child born by Sukarno's second
\nwife Fatmawati, combine modern and traditional styles.<\/p>\n
"I guess I inherit my artistic blood from my parents. Both of
\nthem loved the arts and were quite actively involved in them. As
\na teenager I used to watch my father painting and admired his
\ncollections. This fostered my interests in fine arts and the
\nperforming arts," Guruh said.<\/p>\n
Guruh has received a number of awards from foreign
\norganizations. He was awarded the Chevalier De L'Ordre Des Arts
\nEt Des Lettres from the French government in 1991 and the
\nKawakami Award and Audience Selection Award in Tokyo in 1997.<\/p>\n
He is the third Indonesian to have received the Montblanc
\naward. In 1994, the award went to the late painting maestro
\nBasuki Abdullah, while in 1995 it went to the late singer
\nSudjarwoto Sumarsono, popularly known as Gombloh.<\/p>\n
The award was presented by Wolff Heinrichsdorff, Executive
\nVice President for Marketing and Sales of Montblanc
\nInternational, and Sumarno Lohardjo, President Director of PT
\nSumaco Wahana Utama, Montblanc's agent in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Guruh performed two of his works, Lambang Sari and Gandrung
\nGreget Sari, during the ceremony.<\/p>\n
"People may think that my works have been strongly influenced
\nby Balinese culture, but if you really pay attention I combine
\nmovements from other parts of the country as well," Guruh said.<\/p>\n
With the exception of Wednesday's event, it has been quite a
\nwhile since Guruh took center stage, a situation which he blames
\non the prolonged political and economic crisis.<\/p>\n
This year, Guruh said he would concentrate on the 100th
\nAnniversary of Sukarno, for which he is chairman of the
