Guruh no show for PDI meeting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Guruh Soekarnoputra failed to show up to an
\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI) meeting where he was due to
\nclear-up rumors that he may jump-ship to the ruling Golkar.<\/p>\n
PDI faction leaders waited one and a half-hours in vain for
\nthe member of the House of Representatives' Commission IX in
\ncharge of education and culture.<\/p>\n
\"We are going to report this to the party's executive board,\"
\nsaid Markus Wauran, secretary of PDI faction at the House of
\nRepresentatives, reported Antara.<\/p>\n
In a letter dated Oct. 31, 1996 and signed by Fatimah Achmad,
\nchairperson of PDI faction at the House, Guruh had been asked to
\nattend the meeting at 12 a.m. yesterday. His secretary had said
\nhe would attend.<\/p>\n
Party executives will schedule another meeting. \"We will
\ntolerate him and give him three opportunities,\" Markus said.<\/p>\n
But it is possible he may be dismissed if he refuses to come
\nto the next meetings.<\/p>\n
\"Wait and see. It could happen,\" Markus said.<\/p>\n
Guruh is the younger brother of ousted PDI chief Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri, both children of the late Sukarno, Indonesia's
\nfounding father and first president. He displayed great support
\nfor Megawati when the latter was unseated by government-backed
\nSoerjadi at a congress in June in Medan, North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
Fatimah was one of a number of party executives sacked by
\nMegawati earlier this year, but reinstated by the current
\nexecutive board under Soerjadi.<\/p>\n
Speculations, that Guruh might abandon the conflict-ridden
\nparty and jump ship to Kosgoro, a cooperative affiliated with
\nGolkar, have grown since he appeared in public recently with
\nGolkar leaders.<\/p>\n
Guruh, a choreographer and accomplished musician, produced his
\nlatest album, entitled NTXTC (No To Ecstasy), in cooperation with
\nKosgoro.<\/p>\n
Guruh had dismissed the speculations, saying he wanted to
\nconcentrate on arts and cultural activities because his position
\nas a legislator had not allowed him to do more for the
\ndevelopment of arts and culture in the country.<\/p>\n
He promised to carry out his duties as legislator until the
\nend of his tenure in October 1997.<\/p>\n
\"I have etiquette. I joined officially and I will leave
\nformally too,\" Guruh said, adding that he has not been listed as
