'Gurita' wreck findings studied<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Prosecutors are still hoping to bring to
\ncourt five people suspected of being responsible for the Gurita
\naccident, despite the shipping tribunal's recent ruling that
\nthe ferry sank because of bad weather.<\/p>\n
\"But we have to be extra cautious in pursuing the case because
\notherwise, we might be sued in return,\" said M.A. Rachman, chief
\nof the Aceh provincial prosecutor's office.<\/p>\n
He said on Thursday his office has no intention to protract
\nthe case but pointed out that further evidence gathering to
\nimprove the police dossier is crucial.<\/p>\n
The Gurita ferry sank off Banda Aceh waters in January,
\nkilling 55 people, while 283 others went missing. The ferry sank
\nwhile sailing from Malahayati\/Krueng Raya near Banda Aceh to
\nSabang, the main town of Weh Island opposite Aceh.<\/p>\n
In April, police filed the dossier on five suspects but the
\nprosecutor's office returned it in June, saying that the document
\nneeds to be improved.<\/p>\n
Previous charges include negligence, filing false reports and
\nendangering the lives of others.<\/p>\n
The shipping tribunal cited bad weather, including a 25-knot
\nwind and 3-meter waves, as the cause of the accident. It also
\nruled that Captain Zaini Djambek be acquitted of all charges as
\nhe also died in the accident. (14)<\/p>",
