What does globalization mean to a becak driver?<\/p>\n
"I was asked if globalization meant exporting becak," said
\nLoekman Soetrisno, a professor of rural economy from Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity, Yogyakarta, during a discussion in Jakarta about the
\neconomy of the common people on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Becak (pedicab) is banned in Jakarta, but it is an important
\npublic transportation means in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Since the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in
\nBogor, West Java, in November last year, the word "globalization"
\nhas become very popular among Indonesians from all walks of life.
\nEverybody talks about it and it seems that no day passes without
\n"globalization" being mentioned.<\/p>\n
Many believe that globalization, along with the free-trade
\nconcept, will have a good impact on the economic development in
\nthe country. But Loekman said he was not sure globalization would
\nbe that beneficial for people at the grassroots level. He worried
\nthat the people would not be ready for the trade liberalization
\nand that the number of poor people might increase.<\/p>\n
But how could he explain this to the becak driver?<\/p>\n
He told the becak driver not to worry and promised to give him
