\ndesign award from Architecture Digest, a well-known architectural
\nand design magazine.<\/p>\n
\"I'm very glad that such prestigious award goes to Indonesia.
\nIt will encourage other local designers to follow the path and at
\nthe same time it will promote Indonesia worldwide,\" said Irish
\nborn Garland who married a Madurese designer.<\/p>\n
Garland said the award is given to people who have made
\nachievements in design every ten years.<\/p>\n
Garland has lived in Indonesia for the past 20 years. Here,
\nshe established her reputation as a designer of bamboo furniture
\nand the founder of a bamboo village in Ubud, Bali. She is also
\nchairs a foundation for the development and preservation of
\nbamboo.<\/p>\n
Garland encourages Indonesian hotel and office managers to
\nutilize bamboo, an environmentally-friendly building material,
\ninside their buildings.<\/p>\n
\"I always insist on using bamboo or other local material in my
\nprojects. I happened to turn down a proposal for a big-budget
\nrenovation project in a five-star hotel because the management
\nhas refused to use bamboo for interior devices and ornaments.<\/p>\n
\"We should actually be proud of using local material rather
