Guess What? Gemala Hatta<\/p>\n
Not only was Indonesia's first president Sukarno a womanizer,
\nhe was a matchmaker as well. It was Sukarno who found a match for
\nvice president Mohammad Hatta.<\/p>\n
"Father married mother because of Bung Karno," Hatta's second
\ndaughter Gemala Hatta told reporters Tuesday at a memorial
\nservice for Hatta who died on March 14, 1980.<\/p>\n
Held at Rahmi Hatta's residence on Jl. Diponegoro, Central
\nJakarta, the gathering started with a religious ritual. A black
\nand white documentary film produced by Hatta's foster son, Des
\nAlwi, was shown later in the evening.<\/p>\n
Hatta was 43 when he married 19-year-old Siti Rahmiati on
\nNov.18, 1945.<\/p>\n
"They didn't have a chance to court," Gemala said.<\/p>\n
Asked what made Rahmi marry Hatta, Gemala said, "I think
\nbecause he was someone she could rely on."<\/p>\n
Despite the age difference, Hatta and Rahmi loved each other
\nvery much and they remained faithful to one another. Death was
\nthe only thing that separated them.<\/p>\n
"Father loved only one woman in his life -- Mother," Gemala
\nasserted.<\/p>\n
Rahmi gave birth to three daughters: Meutia Hatta, Gemala
\nHatta and Halida Hatta-Jusuf. (sim)<\/p>",
