Guess What? Arief Budiman<\/p>\n
Judging from the people who were present at the gathering, it
\ncould have been a poem-reading contest between prominent poets,
\nan intellectual seminar or even a human rights demonstration.<\/p>\n
But it wasn't. It was just noted sociologist Arief Budiman and
\nhis wife Leila Chudori hosting a wedding ceremony for their
\ndaughter Susanti Kusumasari. She was married last Sunday to
\nKuskridho Ambardi. Both are graduates of the School of Social and
\nPolitical Sciences at Gajah Mada University.<\/p>\n
In the small, dynamic Central Java town of Salatiga, Arief and
\nLeila did what only a few Indonesians could do: gather some of
\nthe most prominent fighters for democracy. Their guests included
\nAbdurrahman Wahid, Emha Ainun Nadjib, Rendra, Goenawan Mohamad,
\nFikri Jufri, Aristides Katoppo, Marsilam Simanjuntak, Darmanto
\nJatman and "humorologist" Jaya Suprana.<\/p>\n
"Security" was conspicuously absent, however, perhaps because
\nLeila's brother, Minister of Agriculture Sjarifudin Baharsjah was
\nalso among the guests.<\/p>\n
Rendra read some poems, Darmanto made a short speech, Emha
\nblessed the newly weds and Jaya amused the guests with his highly
\nintellectual gags.<\/p>\n
Arief, whose most formal attire is usually a polo shirt, was
\ndressed in long-sleeved brown batik, blue trousers and a black
\npeci cap.<\/p>\n
"Life is full of contradictions. Where there is grief, there
\nwill be happiness, and where happiness prevails, grief may gain
\nthe upper hand. But whatever happens, never give up," he told the
