Guess What? Ali Sadikin<\/p>\n
Former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin received a nice surprise
\nlast Sunday when he was declared Yogyakarta's honorary resident
\nfor his role in making batik the official dress for his staff in
\nthe 1970s while serving as governor.<\/p>\n
The award was presented by Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan
\nHamengkubuwono X during the closing ceremony of the three-day
\nBatik Festival and Competition in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
"This is to show our gratitude for what he has done. His
\npolicy of making batik the official dress had helped to
\npopularize batik and boost its industry," Sri Sultan said.<\/p>\n
Ali Sadikin himself said he never expected to receive the
\naward for his policy. He said he came up with the policy, simply
\nbecause then, batiks was much cheaper than suits.<\/p>\n
"I just wanted to help my staff buy affordable uniforms.
\nThat's all," the 73-year-old man said.<\/p>\n
And he did not realize that there were so many types of and
\ndesigns in batiks.<\/p>\n
"I was only informed a few weeks ago that there are
\nYogyakarta motifs, Surakarta motifs, coastal motifs and so on,"
\nsaid Ali, who hunted for batik outfits with Yogyakarta motifs,
\nprior to attending the event. He also wore one for the
