GTZ contributes to RI development<\/p>\n
The Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)
\nGmbH is Germany's public cooperation for development. It operates
\nwithin the scope of the German Federal Government Development
\nPolicy: foreign policy, economic policy and development policy
\ncomplement one another with a view to building global partnership
\nin cooperation with the countries of the South. This cooperation
\nis practiced in two main areas: Financial Cooperation, handled by
\nKreditanstalt fuer Wiedraufbau (KfW), and Technical Cooperation
\n-- GTZ's area of activity -- which aims to enhance the efficiency
\nof human resources and organizations.<\/p>\n
Presently, GTZ is operating in more than 135 countries;
\nIndonesia being one of its most important partners. This
\ncooperation dates back as far as 1975, and many long-standing
\nfriends and partners of GTZ will well remember our successful
\ncooperation in large integrated regional development projects in
\nWest Sumatra and in East Kalimantan, or in building up the first
\nIndonesian television station TVRI.<\/p>\n
More recent examples of sustainable cooperation include the
\norganizational and regulatory support to Indonesian Telkom prior
\nto and during its transformation phase to privatization, the
\ntechnical design for a mass rapid transport system in the
\nJakarta-Bogor-Tangerang-Bekasi (Jabotabek) area, and the very
\nrewarding community-based projects in Nusa Tenggara Timur and
\nNusa Tenggara Barat provinces, where the work of many young
\nIndonesian professionals and NGOs could be successfully
\nintegrated in the poverty alleviation schemes of the Indonesian
\nGovernment.<\/p>\n
Currently, about 75 expatriate project managers, 40 integrated
\nexperts and more than 350 Indonesian professionals are promoting
\nIndonesia's development in more than 50 technical cooperation
\nprojects on behalf of GTZ.<\/p>\n
Today's priority areas, as agreed between the governments of
\nIndonesia and Germany, include human resource development
\n(particularly basic education and vocational training), social
\nand economic infrastructure (water supply, basic and family
\nhealth, energy and transport), environment protection and natural
\nresource management, rural and agriculture development and the
\nstrengthening of small and medium scale private enterprises.<\/p>\n
Decentralization of political mandates and governmental
\nplanning and decision-making, the increasingly important fight
\nagainst poverty in urban and rural areas, as well as the
\necological and social sustainability of economic development are
\nkey elements in GTZ's approach.<\/p>\n
The deep structural, political and economic crisis hitting
\nIndonesia today is perceived by GTZ as a tremendous challenge: to
\nrethink and further improve its development partnership with
\nIndonesia, and to evaluate and possibly further enhance its
\nimpact. Key questions leading to even closer and more fruitful
\nperformance of our cooperation will be: How can we help to
\nreconcile fast-yielding rescue programs with long-term reform
\nobjectives? How can civil society and the private economic sector
\nbe better integrated into overall development objectives? This
\nincludes efforts to coordinate and link GTZ contributions with
\nother relevant development agents and to disseminate the gains
\nachieved in our projects within the Indonesian society.<\/p>\n
