They should show concern for problems <br>\nfaced by locals if they want to win support from them,\" President <br>\nand Chief Executive Officer of publicly listed PT International <br>\nNickel Indonesia (Inco), Bing Tobing, explained.<\/p>\n<p>A company that fulfills its obligations, such as paying <br>\nroyalties, taxes and land rental fees was good but not enough to <br>\nensure that it can operate peacefully, according to Bing.<\/p>\n<p>\"For us, adapting our presence to the local environment and <br>\ncommunity is a requirement when we want to grow. Only by growing <br>\ntogether with the local people, can we operate peacefully,\" he <br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>To help the surrounding people, he said, the company had <br>\ndesigned and conducted many community development (CD) programs <br>\nbased on what the people need. \"For instance, many young people <br>\nare currently in need of a job, so our CD program is focused on <br>\neducation to allow them to have more job alternatives,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bing also emphasized the importance of disseminating any <br>\nchange of policy made by the company's management, such as a <br>\npolicies on job vacancies or employee recruitment. \"By getting <br>\nthe word out about the changes in policy, possible unexpected <br>\nincidents such as demonstrations can be prevented because locals <br>\nunderstand the reasons,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>PT Inco spends about US$1.5 million on CD programs per year. <br>\nThe money is used to finance the projects related to such things <br>\nas education, health and agriculture in Sorowako, Central <br>\nSulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi.<\/p>",
