Groups differ on street vendors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The conflict between the City Forum (Forkot) and the
\nBetawi Youth Communications Forum (Forkabi) over the presence of
\nstreet vendors along Jl. Salemba and Jl. Diponegoro worsened on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Forkot, which members mostly students, replaced the banner
\nthat prohibiting the presence of the street vendors with one
\nstating that the vendors and the students rejected eviction.<\/p>\n
\"No societal groups has the authority to prohibit the presence
\nof street vendors,\" Kristian, a law student at the University of
\nIndonesia, was quoted as saying by Tempointeraktif.com.<\/p>\n
\"The government may evict them, but should also relocate
\nthem,\" he added.<\/p>\n
A Forkabi member, Rusli, argued that his group only wanted to
\nmake a more comfortable area for pedestrians.<\/p>\n
As members of the two groups were now facing off in the area,
\nBrig. Djoko Ismoyono from the Central Jakarta Police, whose
\nstation is located in the area, said that officers had been
\ndeployed to avoid clashes between the groups. -- JP<\/p>",
