Grenade found outside U.S. embassy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A grenade was found outside the United States
\nEmbassy in Central Jakarta by embassy security personnel on
\nTuesday night.<\/p>\n
The grenade, which was found near a tree at around 10 p.m.,
\ndid not explode.<\/p>\n
Embassy personnel quickly alerted police and the National
\nPolice bomb squad shortly arrived at the scene, a press statement
\nfrom the embassy said.<\/p>\n
City police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman announced that
\nthe grenade was a dud.<\/p>\n
He rejected speculation that there was a political motive
\nbehind the incident. "I think someone just played a bad joke."<\/p>\n
However, Lt. Col. Suryono from the bomb squad said the grenade
\ndid contain a detonator but failed to explode after the pin was
\nremoved.<\/p>\n
"We are now X-raying the grenade to determine the cause of
\nthis failure," he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said based on his team's initial findings, the grenade was
\nmanufactured in England.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, an embassy spokesman said the embassy had not
\nincreased its security since the incident.<\/p>\n
Last Friday, five grenades were found in an abandoned shipment
\nat Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. None of the grenades,
