Greater transparency needed<\/p>\n
A new task has been added to our homework: how to combat
\nrumors and how to prevent them from developing. Still fresh in
\nour minds is the rush on Bank Central Asia that occurred when it
\nwas rumored that Soedono Salim had died.<\/p>\n
We will certainly be trying to find the person(s) who spread
\nthat rumor. It is no easy job to find the people who are
\nspreading rumors. This is a problem which the authorities will
\ncertainly tackle.<\/p>\n
The more important job to look after, however, is to find out
\nwhy the public is so easily taken in by rumors, and how to
\nprevent this from happening. The ease with which rumors can be
\nspread and the fact that people are so easily taken in by them is
\nan indication that something is not right in our society.<\/p>\n
A number of factors have been mentioned as being the reason
\nfor this situation. Examples are a degree of transparency in
\neconomic and business policies that no longer satisfies the
\ndemands of the current market system, the emergence of
\nalternative information media, and our links to the global
\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n
Whether we are ready or not, willing or unwilling, our society
\nwill be affected by that global market demand for transparency.
\nAnd as the degree of transparency that prevails fails to satisfy
\nwhat is required, rumors begin to circulate. In such a condition,
\nrumors easily flourish and people are easily affected.<\/p>\n
