Greater diplomatic efforts urged<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A noted religious figure urged the government on
\nMonday to step up its foreign diplomatic efforts to request the
\nU.S. to cease military attacks against Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
\"I'm waiting for the government to make more concerted
\ndiplomatic efforts,\" Yusuf Hasyim, a leader of Tebu Ireng Islamic
\nboarding school, said, after meeting with Vice President Hamzah
\nHaz at Merdeka Selatan Palace.<\/p>\n
Before meeting Hamzah, Yusuf, the uncle of former president
\nAbdurrahman Wahid, held meetings with other high-ranking
\nofficials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda,
\nCoordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo
\nBambang Yudhoyono and Minister of Social Affairs Bachtiar
\nChamsyah to obtain information on what action the government will
\ntake to ask the U.S. to halt its military attacks on Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Yusuf expressed concern that the attacks, which were designed
\nto be limited and selective, had spread arbitrarily, targeting
\nresidential areas, hospitals and other social institutions,
\ncausing a large number of civilian casualties.<\/p>\n
He said that he had coordinated with other Islamic boarding
\nschools to gather funds for social relief badly needed by the
