Many people question why our intelligence agencies have found
\nit so difficult to find all the local terrorist groups.
\nIntelligence actually puts more emphasis on its support of
\ninformation, while further action depends on the government's
\ndecision to respond to the information through its relevant
\nsecurity arm.<\/p>\n
So far, intelligence units have provided considerable
\ninformation through their findings of Jamaah Islamiyah in
\nSemarang. However, this should be followed up not only by the
\nsecurity agency but also by society, including business
\ncommunities with their internal security systems, which should be
\nmore proactive.<\/p>\n
The controversy following the bombing of the Marriott Hotel
\nhas indeed caused a major change in the public's security stance.
\nBut when it comes to security and intelligence matters, our
\nsociety has a phobia probably owing to the trauma of New Order
\nregime-style intelligence.<\/p>\n
Such an attitude will pose a problem as the present
\nintelligence service has begun to change in line with the
\nprogress of reform. The bomb threats continue while part of the
\npublic keeps worrying about the old practices of the intelligence
\noperatives.<\/p>\n
Therefore, one should be more realistic by prioritizing public
\nsafety and tranquility through the delegation of greater
\nauthority and more \"rights\" to the intelligence agency, so as to
\nprevent bomb threats from haunting us all the time.<\/p>\n
It is sufficient to revise the (antiterrorism) Law No. 15\/2003
\nwithout suspicion, instead of a wholesale adoption of the
\nInternal Security Act of other countries.<\/p>\n
