        "content": "<p>Grand painting exhibit slated for October<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A grand painting exhibition will take place at<br>\nthe Shangri-La Hotel in Central Jakarta in October to delight<br>\nlocal art lovers.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition, which will run from Oct. 18 to 23 and is<br>\nscheduled to be opened by First Lady Tien Soeharto, will display<br>\n500 paintings by noted painters the world over, including<br>\nmasterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Paul Cezanne, Edgar<br>\nDegas, Henri Matisse, Paul Gaugin and Marc Chagall.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from works by international painters, the exhibition,<br>\ncalled The Jakarta International Fine Arts Exhibition, will also<br>\nshowcase rare paintings by prominent Indonesian artists such as<br>\nRaden Saleh, Basuki Abdullah, Affandi, Mochtar Apin and S.<br>\nSudjojono.<\/p>\n<p>Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo, chairperson of Yayasan Seni Rupa<br>\nIndonesia (the Indonesian Fine Arts Foundation) which will<br>\norganize the event, said in a press meeting yesterday: \"The main<br>\npurpose of the coming exhibition is to increase the appreciation<br>\nof art lovers in Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n<p>Because only a small number of Indonesian people have seen<br>\nworld's masterpieces, the coming exhibition is a rare event, she<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>The event is jointly organized by the foundation and the<br>\nLondon-based Bradbury Company, one of the largest companies which<br>\norganizes international art galleries.<\/p>\n<p>Siti Hediyati (Titik) Prabowo, another organizer of the<br>\nexhibition,  added that the foundation will borrow rare paintings<br>\nof Indonesian painters from the Istana Negara (the National<br>\nPalace) and local collectors for use at the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Painting bourses, discussions and workshops will accompany the<br>\ngala event.<\/p>\n<p>Local artists will have the opportunity to win the Philip<br>\nMorris Award.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian artists are invited to take part in the competition<br>\nand are allowed to submit their newest and most original works to<br>\nthe foundation's office on Jl. Taman Anggrek No. S 15 A, Slipi,<br>\nWest Jakarta, by Sept. 10.<\/p>\n<p>\"Up to the present, we have received more than 400 photographs<br>\nof paintings to be included in the competition, \" Titik said.<br>\n(raw)<\/p>",
