Graft is rife in East Timor<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: A member of the House of Representatives
\nexpressed his dismay Saturday with the rampant irregularities
\nplaguing shoddy development projects in the area.<\/p>\n
"I have found that huge funds have been misappropriated by
\nproject managers and contractors," said legislator Salvador
\nJanuario Ximenes Soares as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
According to Salvador, many projects have been transferred to
\nthe government, resulting in quality far lower than expected.<\/p>\n
Salvador, a member of the Jakarta-based House Commission II
\noverseeing domestic affairs, conducted a four-day fact-finding
\nmission in his region earlier this month.<\/p>\n
He determined that a number of project managers, who also hold
\ngovernment positions, failed to accomplish their projects on
\ntime.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that he also had evidence of collusion between
\ngovernment officials and businessmen. As a result, he said,
\ncontractors can walk away from their sub-standard projects
\nwithout fear of government reprisals. (pan)<\/p>",
