Govt weak in security: Party<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The executive board of the Indonesian Justice and
\nUnity Party (PKP Indonesia) pointed out on Saturday that
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri's administration had two
\nweaknesses -- one in ensuring security and the other in enforcing
\nthe law.<\/p>\n
After being in office for almost two years, Megawati remains
\npowerless in preventing bombing incidents that often strike major
\ncities across the country, said PKP Indonesian deputy chairman
\nTatto Prajamanggala.<\/p>\n
He said she also failed to enforce the law, which has been
\nblamed for rising crime in the country.<\/p>\n
Since she was made president in 2001, many big corrupters have
\nnot been sent to prison although several of them had been
\nconvicted by courts, including House of Representatives Speaker
\nAkbar Tandjung.<\/p>\n
This has sent a strong message to the public that Megawati's
\ngovernment has done nothing against corruption, which analysts
\nsay is the core problem of the prolonged crisis.<\/p>\n
Tatto and other PKP Indonesia central board members, including
\nparty chairman Gen. (ret) Edi Sudrajat, were in Surabaya on
\nSaturday to attend the party gathering.<\/p>\n
The meeting was held to declare the party's readiness to
\ncontest the 2004 general elections.<\/p>\n
However, Tatto had one compliment for Megawati, saying she had
\ndone a good job in the field of economics. "At least the rupiah
\nhas been relatively stable under her administration," he said. --
