Govt wants reliable contractors<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: Starting this year, the Tangerang regency office
\nwill require contractors who bid for development projects to have
\na bank balance amounting to at least 10 percent of the value of
\nthe project.<\/p>\n
"With such a requirement, the contractors can no longer play
\nhide and seek with us," Regent Ismet Iskandar told The Jakarta
\nPost on Saturday.<\/p>\n
That way, Ismet said, the administration can minimize
\nadditional expenditure for public facilities, which is financed
\nby taxpayers.<\/p>\n
"We had had numerous experiences with bad contractors who
\nreduced the value of the project by 60 percent," he said, adding
\nthat several contractors had even neglected to complete the
\nproject and still taken their payment.<\/p>\n
Deputy chairman of Tangerang chapter of the Indonesian
\nConstruction Companies Association (Gapeksindo), Khaerudin, said
\nthat such a requirement should only be enforced for medium to
\nlarge companies.<\/p>\n
He also demanded that the administration expedite the issuance
\nof construction permits "because the slow bureaucracy had
\nhampered the implementation, raising the cost of the project". -- JP<\/p>",
