Govt urged to help RI sex workers<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: About 1,500 young Indonesian women are
\nnow trapped in the sex business in Abu Dhabi, capital of the
\nUnited Arab Emirates (UAE), a report said.<\/p>\n
"The women are in dire need of government help to free them
\nfrom commercial sex syndicates in Arab countries," said Maya
\nManurung, a spokesperson for a non-governmental organization on
\nwomen's issues.<\/p>\n
The level of trade in women in a number of cities in
\nIndonesia, Malaysia and the Middle East had reached serious
\nlevels, said Posman Tobing, chairman of House of Representatives
\nCommission VII on health and population issues.<\/p>\n
Maya said that the government, through its embassy in the UAE,
\nought to take the initiative to eradicate all types of immoral
\nbusinesses.<\/p>\n
Most of the women involved in commercial sex activity had been
\ndeceived with promises of well-paid work in factories or as house
\nmaids. In reality, they became trapped in the sex business.<\/p>\n
She said the government should intensify its supervision of
\nthe operations of Indonesian labor recruitment agencies before
\nthey sent workers abroad. --JP<\/p>",
