Govt to start new savings plan for poor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto will launch on Monday a new
\nsavings plan designed specifically for the poor.<\/p>\n
Minister of Population Haryono Suyono gave few details about
\nthe Tabungan Keluarga Sejahtera (Prosperity Family Savings) plan.
\nHe said it encourages the poor to put aside money, starting with
\na small amount.<\/p>\n
They are expected to save Rp 100 a month in the beginning and
\nthen work their way up to Rp 100 a week and then Rp 100 a day,
\nHaryono said after meeting with the head of state.<\/p>\n
The savings plan will be administered by the state-owned PT
\nPos Indonesia which has post office outlets throughout the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Wealthy businesspeople will be invited to attend the launching
\nand are expected to contribute to the plan by providing
\nincentives, Haryono said.<\/p>\n
The signatories of the Bali Jimbaran Declaration will be among
\nthose invited, he said. The tycoons pledged last month to support
\nthe government's effort to eradicate poverty.<\/p>\n
Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono, Minister of Finance Mar'ie
\nMuhammad, Bank Indonesia Governor Soedradjad Djiwandono, Bank BNI
\nPresident Winarto Sumarto and PT Pos Indonesia President Cahyana
\nAhmadjayadi were also present at the meeting.<\/p>\n
Haryono said he is optimistic the savings plan will be a
\nsuccess.<\/p>\n
He pointed to his success in popularizing family planning in
\nthe early 1970s as the source of his optimism. (emb)<\/p>",
