        "content": "<p>Govt to spend $45m on fishing ports<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government will spend about US$45 million<br>\nthis year to expand two major fishing ports in Bitung, North<br>\nSulawesi, and Tual, Maluku, a minister said here on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sarwono<br>\nKusumaatmadja said the two fishing ports, among the largest in<br>\nthe country, were still too small to accommodate large fishing<br>\nships.<\/p>\n<p>\"With the expansion, the government will receive more revenue<br>\nfrom the fishing industry,\" the minister said after addressing a<br>\nworking meeting of the ministry's senior officials.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sarwono, most local and foreign fishing ships<br>\noperating in eastern Indonesian waters prefer to unload their<br>\ncatches at General Santos Port in the southern Philippines due to<br>\nthe poor service and capacity at the two Indonesian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Untung Wahyono, the director general for fisheries at the<br>\nministry, said the government would build a special pier for<br>\nfishing ships at the Bitung port, which at present also serves<br>\npassenger ships.<\/p>\n<p>He said the construction of the new pier and its supporting<br>\nfacilities would cost about $33 million.<\/p>\n<p>The project to expand the receiving capacity of the Tual<br>\nfishing port will cost about $12 million, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Untung said the projects would be financed with loans from the<br>\nJapan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).<\/p>\n<p>The expansion projects, which are scheduled to be completed in<br>\nthree years, also will include the construction of infrastructure<br>\nto allow fishing companies to build processing facilities near<br>\nthe ports.<\/p>\n<p>By April of this year the ministry, in cooperation with JBIC,<br>\nwill complete the renovation of 62 fish landing centers<br>\nthroughout Indonesia, he added.
