Govt to spend $45m on fishing ports<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government will spend about US$45 million
\nthis year to expand two major fishing ports in Bitung, North
\nSulawesi, and Tual, Maluku, a minister said here on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\nKusumaatmadja said the two fishing ports, among the largest in
\nthe country, were still too small to accommodate large fishing
\nships.<\/p>\n
\"With the expansion, the government will receive more revenue
\nfrom the fishing industry,\" the minister said after addressing a
\nworking meeting of the ministry's senior officials.<\/p>\n
According to Sarwono, most local and foreign fishing ships
\noperating in eastern Indonesian waters prefer to unload their
\ncatches at General Santos Port in the southern Philippines due to
\nthe poor service and capacity at the two Indonesian ports.<\/p>\n
Untung Wahyono, the director general for fisheries at the
\nministry, said the government would build a special pier for
\nfishing ships at the Bitung port, which at present also serves
\npassenger ships.<\/p>\n
He said the construction of the new pier and its supporting
\nfacilities would cost about $33 million.<\/p>\n
The project to expand the receiving capacity of the Tual
\nfishing port will cost about $12 million, he added.<\/p>\n
Untung said the projects would be financed with loans from the
\nJapan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).<\/p>\n
The expansion projects, which are scheduled to be completed in
\nthree years, also will include the construction of infrastructure
\nto allow fishing companies to build processing facilities near
\nthe ports.<\/p>\n
By April of this year the ministry, in cooperation with JBIC,
\nwill complete the renovation of 62 fish landing centers
\nthroughout Indonesia, he added. (05)<\/p>",
