Govt to replace KAI management<\/p>\n

The government is planning to replace the management of state
\ntrain operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) due to its failure
\nto prevent accidents as well as to improve the company.<\/p>\n
State Minister of State Enterprises Sugiharto said the high
\nnumber of train crashes and the expiry of the tenure of the
\nincumbent management in June were the main reasons behind the
\nreplacement plan.<\/p>\n
\"The reshuffle will take place immediately. However, we still
\nneed time for the (replacement) plan,\" he was quoted as saying by
\nAntara news agency on Saturday in Bandung during a meeting with a
\nnumber of executives of state enterprises.<\/p>\n
Sugiharto, however, refused to name the candidates for the KAI
\nmanagement as well as when the reshuffle would take place. At
\npresent, Oemar Berto leads the KAI.<\/p>\n
\"We should see the reason for the reshuffle in a more
\ncomprehensive way... It (the reshuffle) is necessary because the
\ngovernment is reviewing the operations and business of PT KAI as
\nwell as our railway system,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sugiharto said that aside from replacing the directors, there
\nshould also be comprehensive measures to rehabilitate the railway
\ninfrastructure managed by the company in order to improve its
\nservice and capacity.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said on Sunday that the
\ngovernment should intervene in helping to solve PT KAI's complex
\nproblems.<\/p>\n
\"PT KAI has numerous problems, from infrastructure, subsidy,
\nconsumers bad habit of not paying tickets and many more. The
\ncompany needs thorough improvement. Therefore, the government is
\nassigning the state minister of state enterprises and minister of
\ntransportation to help solve the problems,\" he said as quoted by
\nAntara.<\/p>\n
The recent accident involved three electric commuter trains in
\nPasar Minggu, South Jakarta, last Thursday, killing three and
\ninjuring dozens of others.<\/p>\n
PT KAI immediately set up a special investigating team to
\ndetermine the cause of the accident, which was the seventh this
\nyear. Meanwhile, the Jakarta Police have questioned six people,
\nincluding the two train drivers, over the incident but the police
\nhave not yet decided whether the accident was caused by
\nmechanical problems, a faulty system or negligence.<\/p>",
