        "content": "<p>Govt to open gate for tourists with vehicles<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government will soon open a gateway for<br>\nforeign tourists coming into Indonesia with vehicles through the<br>\nStrait of Malacca, Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade<br>\nHartarto said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;A joint decree of four ministers and the national police<br>\nchief will be issued in the near future to allow ferries carrying<br>\ntourists with their vehicles crossing the strait,&quot; Hartarto told<br>\na seminar on the natural resource potential of Aceh province.<\/p>\n<p>He said Aceh, on the northern-most of Sumatra island,<br>\ntherefore, should determine which of its ports can be used as the<br>\ngateway.<\/p>\n<p>Aceh is one of the two provinces in Sumatra, which are<br>\ninvolved in the subregional growth triangle, which also includes<br>\nnearby provinces of states in Malaysia (Kedah, Perak, Penang and<br>\nPerlis) and Thailand (Satun, Songkha, Yala, Narathiwat and<br>\nPattani).<\/p>\n<p>The other province involved in the triangle is North Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>Business cooperation in the growth triangle include five<br>\nprojects in trade, agriculture and fisheries, industry and<br>\nenergy, tourism, telecommunications and transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Hartarto also said that the National Development Planning<br>\nBoard, the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of<br>\nTransportation and the Ministry of Tourism, Post and<br>\nTelecommunications will review the plans on the development of<br>\ninfrastructure in northern Sumatra, including Aceh, to facilitate<br>\nbusiness cooperation in the triangle, officially called the<br>\nIndonesia, Malaysia and Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).<\/p>\n<p>Hartarto and Malaysia&apos;s Chief Minister Perlis Abdul Hamid<br>\nPawanteh and Thailand&apos;s Deputy Prime Minister Supachai<br>\nPanitchpakdi, in a meeting in Medan, North Sumatra, in June 1994<br>\nagreed to eliminate any obstacles to economic cooperation in the<br>\narea.<\/p>\n<p>He urged executives of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and<br>\nIndustry to cooperate with local businesspeople in Aceh to<br>\nestablish new businesses in cooperation with partners from<br>\nThailand and Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>The IMT-GT area, including Aceh, according to a study of the<br>\nAsian Development Bank, promises profits to investors because it<br>\nhas abundant resources, while the countries involved have a high<br>\ndegree of complementarity for cooperation with each other.<\/p>\n<p>The bank has identified some 50 projects, policies and<br>\nprograms which are feasible for cooperation in the IMT-GT areas.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Aceh Governor Syamsuddin Mahmud told the seminar<br>\nyesterday that his province needs total investments of Rp 2.1<br>\ntrillion (US$924 million) to support its target of 7.5 percent in<br>\neconomic growth in the 1996 to 1997 period.<\/p>\n<p>He said that 45 percent of the investment will be provided by<br>\nthe government and the local administration, while the remaining<br>\n55 percent is expected from the private sector.
