Govt to limit town development<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: State Minister of Public Housing Akbar Tanjung said
\nSaturday that the government plans to limit the development of
\nnew towns.<\/p>\n
\"The government will tighten rules on town development,\" Akbar
\ntold reporters after opening a seminar called Planning for and
\nControl of New Town Development.<\/p>\n
He did not elaborate on the rules but maintained that
\ndevelopment should be aimed at establishing self-contained
\ncities.<\/p>\n
\"Future towns should be self-contained cities that are able to
\nprovide their residents with everything they need,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that the new towns should be able to act as supporting
\ncities for larger cities.<\/p>\n
\"New towns should be able to curb the movement of people to
\nlarge cities and draw them away from crowded urban centers,\" he
\nsaid, citing the successful development of new towns in Java such
\nas the 6,000-hectare Bumi Serpong Damai complex in the suburbs of
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We do not want the towns to be developed as an extension of
\nthe big cities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Akbar was referring to a statement made by former environment
\nminister Emil Salim, who has suggested establishing a Greater
\nJakarta Coordinating Board to solve the social and environmental
\nproblems that affect the cities of Jakarta, Bekasi, Bogor and
