Govt to license PT Inti as telecoms operator<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government will license the state-owned
\ntelecommunication equipment manufacturer PT Industri
\nTelekomunikasi Indonesia (Inti) to act as a digital cellular
\ntelecommunications operator, a minister said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave
\nannounced that the license will be presented to Inti due to the
\nsignificant growth of its business within the last few years.<\/p>\n
\"Why shouldn't we award the license to the state-owned
\ncompany, which has performed well? In addition to the government,
\nthe company is also owned by the people,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He declined to mention when the license will be awarded.<\/p>\n
Inti, based in the West Java capital of Bandung, is one of
\nten manufacturing firms overseen by the Agency for the Management
\nof Strategic Industries, which is chaired by State Minister of
\nResearch and Technology B.J. Habibie. The other nine companies
\nare electronics manufacturer PT LEN, military equipment
\nmanufacturer PT Pindad, railway equipment producer PT Inka,
\naircraft producer PT IPTN, steel manufacturer PT Krakatau Steel,
\nship builder PT PAL, explosives manufacturer PT Dahana and
\nengineering firms PT Boma Bisma Indra and PT Bharata.<\/p>\n
Inti's management recently received an ISO-9002 certificate
\nfrom the Dutch standardization organization NV Kema. The
\ncertificate was awarded for Inti's digital telephone hub
\nproduction lines.<\/p>\n
According to Joop, Inti will be allowed to operate one of
\ndeveloped digital cellular telecommunications systems currently
\nunder government consideration.<\/p>\n
Several new generations of digital cellular telecommunications
\nsystems are being applied in the world, including the personal
\ncommunication network (PCN), the personal communication service
\n(PCS) and the personal handy-phone system (PHS).<\/p>\n
\"A special team is still studying which of the systems will be
\nappropriate for Indonesia,\" Joop said.<\/p>\n
The government is currently testing the PCN, a system derived
\nfrom the Western world, and the PHS, a Japanese-developed system
\nwhich is estimated to be cheaper than current cellular models.<\/p>\n
Pilot project<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Director General of Post and Telecommunications
\nDjakaria Purawidjaja refused to give any details about the
\nlicensing plan.<\/p>\n
\"The schedule is long, we need to set up a pilot project,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
There are currently two analog and one digital mobile cellular
\ntelecommunications systems in operation in Indonesia. The analog
\nsystems include the nordic mobile telephones (NMT) system which
\nis operated by PT Mobile Selular Indonesia and the advanced
\nmobile phone system (AMPS), operated by PT Metro Selular
\nNusantara, PT Telekomindo Prima Bhakti and PT Komselindo.<\/p>\n
The global system for mobile communications (GSM) is run by
\nthree operators, PT Telkomsel, PT Satelindo and PT Excelcomindo
\nPratama.<\/p>\n
As ruled by the government, each of the seven operators is
\npartially owned by the state-owned telecommunications companies,
\nPT Telkom and PT Indosat, or by either of the two firms.(icn)<\/p>",
