Govt to launch teecommunications project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government will officially launch Telematika
\nIndonesia, an ambitious telecommunications project to prepare the
\ncountry for entry to the information technology era, in January
\nnext year.<\/p>\n

\nPurawidjaja said here yesterday the project consisted of an
\nintegrated program to develop the country's telecommunications
\ninfrastructure, its application and human resources.<\/p>\n
He said that Telematika Indonesia was based on the Nusantara
\n21 superhighway information project developed by the Ministry of
\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications.<\/p>\n
\"Nusantara 21 is a concept and vision for the country's
\ntelecommunications sector in the 21st century set by the Ministry
\nof Tourism, Post and Telecommunications. The vision has been
\nenriched and sharpened by other sectors based on Presidential
\nDecree No. 30\/1997 as Telematika Indonesia,\" he said after
\nopening a meeting of the Indonesian Telecommunications Society
\nheld at PT Indosat here yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said that a series of action plans would be completed by
\nDec. 19.<\/p>\n
\"On Jan. 15, Telematika will be revealed, just wait and see.
\nWe have prepared a very thick manuscript,\" he said, adding that
\nTelematika was now a multi-sector project and more detailed.<\/p>\n
He refused to give further information.<\/p>\n
Nusantara 21 is Indonesia's mega telecommunications plan to
\nenter the information technology era. The project is designed to
\nconnect the whole archipelago to the information superhighway
\nthrough multimedia networks.<\/p>\n
The project, which will involve both private and government
\nparticipation, is defined as the integration of
\ntelecommunications and computing hardware and software having the
\nmain components of telecommunications, the computer industry and
\ntelevision broadcasting, as well as the media industry.<\/p>\n
To enhance the project, a team comprising 14 cabinet ministers
\nhas been formed to help usher Indonesia into the information
\nsuperhighway era. The team, headed by Coordinating Minister for
\nProduction and Distribution Hartarto, aims to find synergy
\nbetween the information and telecommunications sectors, or what
\nthe decree terms Telematika after the Indonesian words
\nTelekomunikasi and Informatika.<\/p>\n
The team will also handle Nusantara 21 to develop the nation's
\ninfrastructure in telecommunications, multimedia and information
